USS Shipley Bay Shellback Booklet
The Crossing the Line ceremony is an initiation rite that commemorates a sailor's first crossing of the Equator.  Sailors that have never crossed the Equator are nicknamed Polywog's.  After the ceremony and initiation, Polywog's become Shellback's. This booklet documents the ceremony where the USS Shipley Bay, (CVE-85) crossed the equator for the first time on 7 September 1944. "Cleansed of Polywog Slime, the Shellback Emerges".
