George H. Bush piloted an Air Squadron VT-51 Grumman TBM Avenger named "Barbara II" while attached to the USS San Jacinto (CVL-30). While on a bombing mission over Chichi Jima on September 2, 1944, his aircraft was shot down.  His crew included Radioman Second Class John Delaney and Lieutenant Junior Grade William White.  George H Bush bailed out and was rescued several hours later.  His crew members did not survive.

This illustration was realized and contributed by Gregory Proch, with the nice help of John Batchelor.
